Pablo Picasso. Artist and books

17.12.2017 – 16.03.2018

Curators: Boris Friedman, collector; Yuliya Marankova, researcher of the Department of Prints and Drawings of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

The New Jerusalem Museum and Exhibition Center, jointly with the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, prepared a large-scale exhibition of prints by Pablo Picasso, one of the most prominent painters of the 20th century. He created these prints in the format of livre d’artiste (the artist’s book). The works created by Picasso from 1919 to 1969 will be put on display. Such a rich selection of Picasso’s livre d'artiste art works has never been made available for the Russian art lovers before.

Most of the exposition items are courtesy of the Russian collectors Georgy Gens and Boris Friedman. There are also original Picasso’s prints from the holdings of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Boris Friedman was invited as a curator of this exhibition. He has a long record of organizing and executing similar projects exhibiting the livre d'artiste visuals. He is the founder and the head of Microinform company, one of the leading Russian IT educational centers. He has been collecting livre d'artiste items for over 20 years.

Pablo Picasso’s first experience with the genre of livre d'artiste date back to 1905 and the last piece was created in 1972, only 4 months before his death. The full catalog of Picasso’s livre d’artiste items published in 1983 by Patrick Kremer lists 156 editions with original Picasso’s prints and provides detailed descriptions of 800 etchings, lithographies, woodcuts, and linocuts. The exhibition includes the most important and the most typical prints by Picasso. 13 books with etchings, lithographies and woodcuts by the world-renowned artist will be presented. Comparing Picasso’s prints from the 1950s and 1960s from the holdings of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts with his easel paintings makes it clear that they are stylistically homogeneous.
