Etching is an intaglio technique in which the artist covers a polished metal plate with a layer of acid-resistant varnish, scratches a design through it with special etching needles of different size, and immerses the plate in an acid bath. The acid bites into the exposed metal, producing an image. The latter can be further elaborated or changed by additional etching or incising with a burin or etching needle (the so-called «drypoint» technique, after which the plate is not immersed in acid again) to efface the lines and re-polish the plate. All the changes on the plate that are recorded on prints are called «states».

Call for donations for the restoration campaign of the Egyptian funerary shroud of the 2nd century AD
18.08.2015 – 11.10.2015
We continue the call for donations for the restoration campaign of the Egyptian funerary shroud of the 2nd century AD with a unique image. A woman in a pink tunic holding a hand of a boy in a white toga is depicted in the center of the shroud. The faces of the woman and the child, who is, without any doubt, her little son, are individually portrayed. It is highly probable that the woman and the child died at the same time and thus are depicted together on this funerary cerement. It is also possible that it was the woman who died, and the artist added the image of a child to emphasize her maternal role. The mother and her son stand between the two Egyptian gods – Anubis (the figure with a jackal's head), responsible for embalming and Osiris (the mummy-like figure), the ruler of the underworld.

To mark 120 years since Varvara Stepanova’s birth the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry and the Rodchenko and Stepanova Archive present the exhibition “At Home with Rodchenko and Stepanova”. The exhibition focuses on the work of these leading artists of the Russian avant-garde, including their role as teachers. It features more than 250 exhibits: paintings, works on paper, photographs and personal effects from the Rodchenko and Stepanova Archive. Works by their students at VKhUTEMAS give an idea of Rodchenko and Stepanova’s “home” as the territory of a new art. Rodchenko and Stepanova worked together their whole lives, in a single style, and often on the same themes. Rodchenko was the creative leader, the generator of ideas and original methods. Stepanova consolidated these innovations in her own independent way and was an excellent organiser.
