Printmaking techniques: Etching

13.10.2015 – 01.11.2015

Main Building

Etching is an intaglio technique in which the artist covers a polished metal plate with a layer of acid-resistant varnish, scratches a design through it with special etching needles of different size, and immerses the plate in an acid bath. The acid bites into the exposed metal, producing an image. The latter can be further elaborated or changed by additional etching or incising with a burin or etching needle (the so-called «drypoint» technique, after which the plate is not immersed in acid again) to efface the lines and re-polish the plate. All the changes on the plate that are recorded on prints are called «states».

The show “Les années folles” de Montparnasse” will follow the exhibition “The School of Paris” held at The Pushkin state Museum of Fine Arts in 2011–2012, which became, in a certain way, a “group portrait” of the masters of this artistic community. The term “School of Paris” was introduced by a French critic André Warnod, he called artists who came to Paris from various countries in the first half of the 20th century “masters of the School of Paris”. This artistic group includes Chaim Soutine, Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani, Kees van Dongen, Constantin Brâncuși, Louis Marcoussis, Gino Severini and many others.

Call for donations for the restoration campaign of the Egyptian funerary shroud of the 2nd century AD

18.08.2015 – 11.10.2015

Main Building

We continue the call for donations for the restoration campaign of the Egyptian funerary shroud of the 2nd century AD with a unique image. A woman in a pink tunic holding a hand of a boy in a white toga is depicted in the center of the shroud. The faces of the woman and the child, who is, without any doubt, her little son, are individually portrayed. It is highly probable that the woman and the child died at the same time and thus are depicted together on this funerary cerement. It is also possible that it was the woman who died, and the artist added the image of a child to emphasize her maternal role. The mother and her son stand between the two Egyptian gods – Anubis (the figure with a jackal's head), responsible for embalming and Osiris (the mummy-like figure), the ruler of the underworld.
