Art of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

The Italian Courtyard on the ground floor of the Museum introduces visitors to the art of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. On the first floor and arranged in chronological sequence, visitors will find casts and copies of outstanding works drawn from Early Christian, Byzantine and West European art of the Middle Ages, including Byzantine mosaics, Romanesque and Gothic sculpture. The Early and High Renaissance are illustrated by casts of works from leading masters: Filippo Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Jacopo della Quercia, Donatello and Michelangelo.

Gallery No. 7 displays the painting of Byzantium and Italian art from the proto-Renaissance through to Mannerism. The works of art exhibited here previously occupied four different halls. The Byzantine icons were previously in the gallery devoted to Eastern Christianity, while Italian art was exhibited together with works by Dutch and German artists of the 15th-16th centuries.

The art of the Northern Renaissance now has a separate gallery of its own, containing more than a hundred outstanding works from painters of the Netherlands, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Since 2009 a quarter of them is being exhibited for the first time. The collection of 15th-century German art in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is the finest in Russia, both as regards size and quality.

The wooden and small bronze sculptures and works of decorative and applied art from Germany, Spain and France of the 12th-16th centuries were recently brought out from the Museum's repositories and are of undoubted interest for visitors.
