Collection of Plaster Cast Reproductions

The creators of this Museum envisaged it as a temple to the Muses, which would provide an idea of the classic periods of world art. The façade of the building is embellished by an Ionic colonnade based on the proportions of the famous Erechteion temple on Athen's acropolis. The sculpted frieze on the attic storey is the work of the St. Peterburg sculptor, G.R.Zaleman and depicts a scene from the Olympic Games. On the walls of the Museum behind the exterior colonnade there is a second frieze: in this the German sculptor, K. Armbruster has reproduced parts of the composition from the Panathenaic frieze in another renowned Ancient Greek temple – the Parthenon.

As visitors come into the Museum, they find themselves in a rather dark entrance hall containing large Egyptian columns, which gives way to the majestic sweep of the grand staircase faced with pink marble and complete with monolith columns with bronze capitals. After the staircase there follows the White Hall, filled with natural light, which presents as a two-tier basilica containing Corinthian columns. The picturesque frieze behind the columns of the grand staircase was executed by the artists I.I.Nivinskii and K.P. Stepanov and based on motifs drawn from the vase-painting of Ancient Greece. The Museum has been designed to embody enlightenment through art. The Greek inscriptions on the entablature of the colonnade of the grand staircase read: "To know beauty is the finest thing in life" or "Art is a refuge for men in misfortune".

The halls on each side of the entrance are the so-called Greek and Italian Courtyards. These immediately give the beholder an idea of what the Museum's collection of casts has to offer and, also, of its main sections devoted to Classical art, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
