“Raku in Russia” exhibition opened in Japan

In 2015 the exhibition entitled “Raku: The Cosmos in a Tea Bowl” was held in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, jointly organized by the Japan Foundation and the Raku Museum (Kyoto). The collection of Raku ware (ceramics for tea ceremonies) holds a unique place in the Japanese culture and attracted a great deal of interest from the Russian public.

The “Raku in Russia” exhibition that opened this fall in the Raku Museum is a special project that concludes a series of exhibitions of the Raku collection in Japan and abroad. The exhibition features important art works from the dynasty of Raku masters, including the “Two-Color Lion Figure” (a very valuable cultural artifact), a black Mozuya Guro raku bowl by Chōjirō, and a black Aoyama raku bowl (a very valuable art piece) by the Raku master Dōnyū. These objects make the exhibition a truly notable event.

Along with the art works that were shown in Russia, the exhibition includes Russian children’s drawings of raku bowls, as well as varieties of raku pieces that children made in a pottery studio at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts under the supervision of Kichizaemon, the 15th grand master of the Raku line.
